Blood in Crime Scene Investigation

At the scene of a violent crime, the examining officer will likely find blood and traces of other bodily fluids. These can tell a great deal about what occurred, not only regarding how the crime was committed, but also about the people involved.

Nearly everybody knows their blood type, whether it is A, B, AB, or 0, and Rhesus negative or positive. This categorising of blood into types was first done by Austrian physiologist Karl Landsteiner at the end of the 19th century. In his experiments, he took small amounts of blood and separated the red cells from the liquid, called serum. He achieved this by spinning the blood at high speed in a centrifuge. Then he took the serum and added red cells from different people. They behaved in two different ways: either the cells mixed with the serum, or they clumped together (clotted), (”agglutinated”).

Many attempts at blood transfusion had been made in the past, but this observation explained for the first time why so many had failed. If the blood was not of precisely the same type as that in the body, it resulted in agglutination, and the patient died. Quick tests of blood samples to discover whether agglutination will occur is now made before a transfusion is performed.

DIVIDING BLOOD INTO GROUPS
Red blood cells carry substances called antigens. These help make antibodies which fight infection and disease. Landsteiner thought that his experiment showed the presence of two specific antigens, which he labeled A and B. The discovery of these antigens enabled him to divide human blood into 4 basic groups:

Group A: antigen A present; antigen B absent
Group B: antigen A absent; antigen B present
Group AB: both antigens A and B present
Group 0: both antigens absent

The specific blood group of a person depends on the genetic inheritance from both parents. Known as ABO typing, it has been used, for example, to help identify the biological father in a paternity case. How common each group is varies from one national population to another. In the United States, for example, the relative proportions of ABO groups are roughly 39 percent A, 13 percent B, 43 percent 0, and 5 percent AB.

In 1927, Landsteiner found two other antigen types, labeling their occurrence as M, N, and MN. In 1940, working in the United States, he and A.S. Wiener discovered the Rhesus factor, named after the Rhesus monkeys they investigated. Since then, other researchers have introduced more than a dozen further group systems. Different proteins and enzymes associated with specific blood groups have also been identified.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR FORENSICS
The ability to identify blood type is a powerful tool for uncovering important evidence in a forensic investigation. If, for example, a victim’s ABO type is 0, and bloodstains of this type are discovered on the clothing of a suspect whose type is A, there is a possibility that they have come from the victim.

Making use of the many other blood type systems now available, this probability is greatly increased. If blood of type 0 occurs in 43% of the population, the substance haptoglobin-2 in 36 percent of these, and the enzyme PGM-2 in 5%, then the probability of an individual having these three blood types together is 43 x 36 x 5 = 7,740 in 1,000,000. In other words, around eight people in every thousand will have this specific type of blood. It’s still not enough to obtain a conviction on this evidence alone, but it can help to reduce the group of suspects.

In 1925, another important discovery was made. Around 80% of humans are ’secretors’. This means their saliva, urine, perspiration, and semen contain the same substances as their blood, and can be used for typing in much the same way. In 1940, two British researchers discovered it was possible to distinguish between female and male body cells, especially the white blood cells and those of the lining of the mouth. Blood typing is now so precise that recently one scientist showed that he could distinguish between the blood of his twin daughters, who were genetically identical, because one had experienced chicken pox and the other hadn’t.

SPLASHES OF BLOOD
At the scene of a violent homicidal attack, blood may be present in considerable quantities. Not only will it be on the victim, but also on the weapon and the surroundings. Indoors, the floors, walls, and even the ceilings may be splashed. Careful observation of these bloodstains can provide valuable clues about what took place. Bloodstains and splashes are classified into six basic types.

Round drops are seen on horizontal surfaces; depending on the height from which they fell, they can spray out into a starlike shape. Splashes of blood are shaped like an exclamation mark; they show that blood has flown through the air and hit a surface at an angle. While a victim is still alive, spurts of blood result from the pumping action of the heart. A major artery can spray blood a great distance.

Pools form around the body of the bleeding victim. If there is more than one pool, he either dragged himself, or was dragged, from one area to another before dying. Smears are likely also found in this case. Trails are left when a bloody body is moved. There will be drops found if the body was carried, and smears if it was dragged.

spit-roast-hire-sydneyEveryone has their special memory of family barbecues when they were younger, with dad at the helm turning the meat. A spit roast can be described as the ultimate barbecue for an evening of socializing be it with friends or family. This is because the rotisserie serves as a centerpiece for the evening as well as a handy conversation starter. One of the greatest benefits of a spit roast is the ease of use compared to that of a traditional barbecue. No more slaving over a hot grill hoping that the meat is just right. The rotisserie takes care of even heat distribution as well as leaving the “cooks” hands free to actually enjoy the party. The only thing that a chef needs to concentrate on is the basting of the meat and veggies on the spit, one might favour a smokey hickory baste, or maybe a special family recipe. The options are boundless and only limited to ones imagination. Spit roast hire Sydney can help you get your spit roast organised with supplies and advice.

Another great benefit of the Spit roast is the ability to serve any number of people that may be present at the occasion. Did ten extra guests suddenly crash the party? No problem! just slap on another hunk of meat to the rotisserie and you’re sorted! This does not necessarily mean that one needs to cook huge amounts of meat at a time in order have a spit roast. Any number of portions can be catered for, be it two or fifty people.

It’s quite easy to assume that vegetarians would be left out of the equation when talking about a spit roast, this could not be further from the truth. There are various options available for vegetarians which involve placing different vegetables such as aubergines or squashes on the rotisserie. These can be placed right next to the meat so that everyone at the party is catered for with nobody feeling excluded. The presence of a spit roast can truly give a party a greater chance of success.

Law firm marketing: Making the most of what you’ve got!

Whether the marketing strategy for your law firm revolves around online marketing, niche marketing to particular industries, traditional advertising, or just retaining and growing wallet share of a solid growth of clients, you will need to generate content.

Content is an essential part of legal marketing, without it you may as well not bother with a law firm marketing plan. But producing content requires hard work, and you should make the best of the writing you manage to produce. Following are some quick ideas to help you use two of the most commonly produced types of legal marketing content as best you can.

Law Firm Marketing - Written material (blogs, email alerts, brochures, guides, information sheets)
If you’ve created some quality, interesting material of any of the forms mentioned, don’t just send it off once or print it and let it sit in your reception area. You can distribute that content as widely as is possible. For each piece of writing you produce, consider:

- Have I distributed it to as many, relevant, clients as I can?
- Has it been loaded to my website?
- Have I sent it directly to referrers, associates and other professionals?
- Have I linked to it with a post on Facebook and a tweet on Twitter?
- Has it been sent to media contacts?
- Is everyone in my company aware of it and could they explain it in detail if a client asks about it?
- Can I transform it into a different type of content and distribute in a different form?

Law Firm Marketing - Presentations
Presentations are usually prepared with a particular reception in mind, or because of a particular request. As a result they are often presented only once and then left to stagnate. The large amount of effort and time required to prepare them results in only a one time showing. If you want to get much more benefit from your presentation consider:

- What other companies can I present it to?
- How could I let the most people know about it?
- Have I discussed it on my website, Facebook, Twitter, and suggested that I present it to others?
- Is it relevant to send a hard copy of the presentation to those who couldn’t attend the seminar?
- Can I record an audio or video of the presentation and distribute it via email or directly?
- Is it viable to write an article or blog to discuss topics that arose from the presentation?
- Have I sent additional content to all the people who attended the presentation?

Although some of these ideas might feel like additional work at a time when you’ve possibly created a dent in your monthly billings with the amount of time you spent preparing the first lot of material, it is essential to remember that it is much easier to add a tiny amount of time now to really maximise on what you’ve already produced than to produce a completely new piece of legal marketing material.

Maximise the results of the time you put into law firm marketing and you’ll find that the next time you need to create content you’ll feel more confident about how effective that content will be.

The two most important factors that decide how similar you are as a couple are:

A similar degree of psychological vitality and maturity and a compatible ranking of Instinctual Variants.

The 3 Instincts represent the inherant energy or drive that are innately part of us as humans. Our actions are highly engaged with and often dependent on these libidinal, instinctual energies to give it its spark.

Self Preservation Instinct.
People of this Instinctual variant are preoccupied with the essential survival needs as they translate into our contemporary society, for example, finance, food, housing, health, physical safety and comfort.
Being safe and physically comfortable are priorities, and they will tend to bring these supplies with them.
When entering a room, they will tend to notice lighting, uncomfortable seating, the room temperature, when the coffee break will be, and whether they will like the food provided. They also tend to be the most practical in the sense of taking care of basic life necessities.
They are the most introverted of the types.

Sexual/ Intimate Instinct.
People of this variant have a strong desire for intensity of experience and affection. The honest riveting gaze is the dead giveaway. When they enter a situation they automatically gravitate toward people they feel attracted to, as if they are looking for the juice. These people can be intimacy junkies, often ignoring pressing obligations or even basic hygiene if they are infatuated with something that has captivated them. This gives a expansive exploratory approach to life, but can also generate a lack of focus of one’s own goals.

Social Instinct.
People of this variation are focused on their interactions with other people and with the sense of value and esteem they receive from their involvement in collective activities. These include work, family, hobbies and clubs.
Upon entering a room, these people would immediately be aware of the power structures and subtle politics between different people and social circles. They are subconsciously attuned on other people’s reaction to them, particularly about whether they are being accepted or not.
They need to interact with others to feel secure, alive and energised. They seem to enjoy interacting with people, but they avoid intimacy.
They are the most extroverted of the types.

Within each person, one of these three Instincts will dominate. In fact these three traits can be ordered like the layers of a cake, with the most predominant one at the top. The least powerful one, at the bottom, is termed the blind spot.
These inherent instincts play an important role in our relationships because people of the same type tend to share values and to understand each other innately, and therefore feel very compatible.

In relationships between 2 different Instinctual types, each will struggle to convert the other.

The Importance of Proofing Designs

October 7, 2011 by Mr McGoogle · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

You’ve determined it’s time for a new website or image. For many, the first step is to choose the right organization. However, the first thing you need to do is develop at least a basic concept of what you expect from a completed product. Not only is this step commonly overlooked in the initial phase of project formulation, but also during the creative briefing phase after recruiting a design company.

Everyone wants to hand off a project to the professionals and let them take care of everything. If you’re having your car washed, then nothing is really needed from you. For other projects, you need to be more directly involved. Website design and graphic design are two areas where getting yourself involved is necessary to the ideal design for you and your organization.

During your first meeting with a website and graphic design company, you should supply them with your ideas and goals. This gives the company with a starting point. This doesn’t mean you are done. No one is a mind reader. In order to be absolutely certain you get the best design possible, you must take the creative briefing stage extremely.

This is the part of the project where you work one on one with the designers to ensure they completely understand what you want. The more they understand, the quicker that can deliver the finished project. It also reduces the number of initial design changes.

The next step before the designer can work on your project is proofing your design. You should never just quickly glimpse the design and give your approval. Look over the design plans as thoroughly as you would any important document. If the design isn’t exactly as you envisioned it and doesn’t provide the features you discussed, now is the time to make changes.

Waiting until the final project is delivered means time consuming revisions for both you and the designer. By involving yourself in both the creative briefing and design proofing stages, you save both time and money. You also get the perfect website or graphic design the first time around. The sooner your project is in place, the sooner your customers and visitors will see it.

You should never take this responsibility lightly. It’s your design, your website. Take the time to ensure the design company you choose fully understands your vision. By communicating your needs, the company is able to provide suggestions. With thorough communication between both parties, the best designs and sites are created.

Choosing a Mackay Lawyer, Solicitor or Law Firm

October 6, 2011 by Mr McGoogle · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Uncategorized

As a popular region, there are many new residents in the Mackay region who require the services of a Mackay lawyer or law firm for the first time. Finding a lawyer to do the legal work to help you buy a home or building, to give advice about starting a business or to prepare legal documents like wills or enduring powers-of-attorney, can be a daunting and worrying time.

When you are trying to choose a Mackay lawyer, solicitor or law firm you should consider looking for these characteristics:

Satisfied Customers
For most individuals it is impossible to compare the quality of legal services provided by one Mackay solicitor/lawyer or another. Unless you regularly use the same sort of legal service you won’t really be able to compare different law firms. Look for a Mackay lawyer that is proud of their past performance and offers a number of testimonials from previous clients. If they have numerous testimonials it lets you know two things. First, that they have a lot of happy clients and secondly, that they are willing to take time and trouble to discover what clients think of their service. They understand that they are a service-oriented business.

Local knowledge
Any Mackay lawyer or solicitor should have a good local knowledge and demonstrated experience in helping others in the city. Look for firms that have worked on local developments or firms with established conveyancing sections that will have developed a valuable source of “inside knowledge” about the property market, local agents and banks which can make a huge difference to the way your transaction will be dealt with.

Breadth of services
While most people only need a lawyer rarely, there is value in choosing a Mackay solicitor, lawyer or law firm that can provide you with the full range of services without you having to find alternate providers. Finding a firm that can provide conveyancing, estate planning, disputes, business services and even workplace or employment issues, means you can be confident that the one firm which will meet all your legal needs. Law firms value clients that use a range of services, and will often provide those services more cheaply and efficiently when they have provided other services for you in the past.

*In Queensland a person with legal qualifications was traditionally referred to as a solicitor while a person who “had standing” to represent you in court was called a barrister. More recently the general term lawyer has become more widespread and can be used to describe either of these types of legal practitioner. In some other states of Australia the conveyancing process (the legal process required to transfer ownership of house) can be undertaken by licenced conveyancers. This is not the case in Queensland where conveyancing must be undertaken by a solicitor/lawyer.

John Gray is a practising solicitor and marketing consultant who has worked with leading Mackay law firms. If you need a Mackay solicitor or Mackay lawyer contact John Gray for a recommendation.
