An American painter who led Abstract Expressionism, an art movement individualised by the impulsive gestures in paint generally referred to as “action painting.” Throughout his lifetime he received vast criticism and serious appreciation for the modern “poured” or “drip” technique he employed to create his unforgettable artworks. Among his contemporaries, he was recognised for his deeply personal and completely infallible focus to his art. His works had significant influence on the other artists of the time and on various later art movements in the US. He is also one of the first American painters to be acknowledged throughout his life and after as a peer of 20th-century European founders in contemporary art.
Early life and work
Paul Jackson Pollock was the fifth and youngest son of Stella May McClure and LeRoy Pollock, who were both of Scotch-Irish descent (LeRoy’s original surname was McCoy before his adoption in around 1890 by the family Pollock) and he was born and grew up in Iowa. The family moved away from Cody, Wyoming, eleven months after Jackson’s birth; he would know Cody only from photographs of the family. Through the following 16 years the Pollocks lived in California and Arizona, eventually going on to move nine times. In 1928 they moved to Los Angeles, where Jackson as a young man enrolled at the Manual Arts High School. At the school he was taught by Frederick John de St. Vrain Schwankovsky, a painter and illustrator who was a member of the Theosophical Society, a sect promoting metaphysical and occult spirituality. Schwankovsky gave Pollock the essential training in drawing and painting, introduced him to advanced currents of European contemporary art, and encouraged his curiosity in theosophical pieces. At the same time, Pollock - raised an agnostic - also attended the camp meetings of the original messiah of the theosophists, Jiddu Krishnamurti, a close friend of Schwankovsky. These spiritual explorations permitted him to embrace the ideas of the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung and the expression of unconscious imagery in his works of his years to follow.
In the fall of 1930 Pollock followed his brother Charles who in 1922 had left home to study art in the city of New York, where he enrolled with the Art Students League under his brother’s teacher, the regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton. (Jackson disassociated with his Christian name, Paul, around his time in New York.) He studied life drawing, painting, and composition with Benton for the following 2.5 years, leaving the school in the early part of 1933. For the following two years Pollock lived in poverty, originally with Charles and, by the 1934 fall, with his brother Sanford. He then shared an apartment in Greenwich Village with Sanford and his wife until 1942.
Pollock was employed by the WPA Federal Art Project in the fall of 1935 as an easel painter. This employment permitted him economic security during the remaining years of the Great Depression as well as the possibility to further his art. From his study with Benton through to 1938, Pollock’s style was deeply shaped by the compositional methods and regionalist subject matter of his teacher and by the poetically expressionist vision of the American painter Albert Pinkham Ryder. It depicted a majority of small landscapes and figurative scenes such as Going West (1934–35), in which Pollock utilized motifs taken from photographs of his birthplaceof Cody.
In 1937 Pollock began psychiatric treatment for alcoholism, and he suffered a nervous breakdown in 1938, which caused him to be institutionalized for about four months. After these experiences, his work became semiabstract and showed the assimilation of motifs from the modern Spanish artists Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, as well as the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco. Jungian symbolism and the Surrealist exploration of the unconscious also influenced his works of this period; indeed, from 1939 through 1941 he was in treatment with two successive Jungian psychoanalysts who used Pollock’s own drawings in the therapy sessions.

Action painting is a direct, instinctive, and highly dynamic type of art that involves the impulsive use of speedy, extensive brushstrokes and the by-luck effects of dripping or spilling paint onto the piece. The term was first labelled by the American art critic Harold Rosenberg in his attempt to characterize the art by a group of American Abstract Expressionists (see Abstract Expressionism) who had been employing the method since around 1950. Action painting is different from the delicately preplanned art of the “abstract imagists” and “colour-field” painters, which represents the other large direction found in Abstract Expressionism and parallels Action painting only in the commonly total dedication to unfettered personal expression free of all traditional aesthetic and/or social values.
The artworks of the Action painters Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Bradley Walker Tomlin, and Jack Tworkov reflect the importance of the “automatic” techniques that progressed in Europe during the 1920s and ’30s by the Surrealists. While Surrealist automatism (q.v.), which were scribblings recorded without the artist’s conscious ideas, was originally utilized to expose unconscious associations in the viewer, the automatic intent of the Action painters was primarily conceived as a process to give the artist’s instinctive creative forces free play and of displaying these forces directly to the viewer. In Action painting, the very painting act being the point of the artist’s personal interaction with his tools, was as fundamental as the finished piece of art.
It is well understood that Jackson Pollock’s abstract drip paintings, created from 1947, threw the light on the bolder, gestural techniques that are particular to Action painting. The speedy brushstrokes of de Kooning’s “Woman” series, dating in the early 1950s, successfully progressed a richly emotive, expressive style. Action painting went on to have major significance through the fifties in Abstract Expressionism, with the most important art movement happening in the States. By the end of the decade, however, leadership of the movement had shifted to the colour-field and abstract imagist painters, the followers of whom in the 60s resisted against the irrational technique of the Action painters.
