The tensile-strength test is inherently futile; at the time of the process of collating material, the sample is destroyed. While this is acceptable when a plentiful sample of the sample material is available, nondestructive techniques are preferred for materials that are expensive or hard to make up or that have been formed into completed or semifinished items.
Liquids
One commonly used nondestructive procedure, used to locate surface breaks and flaws in samples, uses a penetrating fluid, which needs to be luminescently coloured or fluorescent. After being painted on the surface of the metal and allowed to sink into any tiny cracks, the liquid is wiped off, leaving easily uncovered cracks and weaknesses. An analogous method, used for nonmetals, requires an electrically charged liquid rubbed on the sample surface. After superfluous fluid is removed, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed onto the nonmetal and draws to the breaks. Neither of these techniques, however, can identify internal imperfections.
Radiation
Internal, like external weaknesses, can be detected under X-ray or gamma-ray technologies in which the radiation scans the sample and impinges on a subject photographic film. Under some circumstances, it may be possible to target the X rays onto a significant area within the object, bringing up a 3D image of the flaw markings along with its location.
Sound
Ultrasonic inspection of areas involves transmission of sound waves above human hearing range within the sample. By the reflection process, a sound wave is targeted over one area of the subject, reflected off the far end, and returned onto a receiver that is located at the starting side. When locating a flaw or imperfection in the test sample, the signal is reflected and its traveling time altered. The actual delay then becomes a signal of the location of the imperfection; a map of the material can then be generated to isolate the location and dimensions of the flaws. Using the through-transmission process, the transmitter and receiver need to be situated on opposite ends of the sample; interruptions in the transmission of the sound waves are found to target and measure imperfections. Usually a water medium is used by which transmitter, sample, and receiver will be immersed.
Magnetism
As the magnetic traits of a test piece are strongly influenced by its overall shape, magnetic techniques can be employed to reveal the area and indicative size of weaknesses and marks. For magnetic testing, an object is employed that holds a big coil of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Held inside this larger wire is a shorter coil (the secondary coil), to which is attached an electrical measuring device. The steady current in the larger coil generates current to react through the secondary coil through the process of induction. When an iron piece is placed within the secondary coil, obvious changes in the further current will signal defects in the rod. This process only isolates differences in areas in the length of a piece and cannot locate long or continuous defects that often. Another such process, making use of eddy currents induced in a primary coil, also can be utilized to detect imperfections and marks. A steady current is induced in the test object. Marks that lie across the signal of the current make for resistance of the test object; this determination should be measured with better processes.
Infrared
Infrared techniques also have been utilized to detect material continuity in complex construction situations. Another kind of technique utilizes thermal coatings that change hue on reaching a determined degree.
